Restore Virtual Machine from Backup (Restore to Original)

Last Updated:

Background: This process will outline how to restore a Virtual Machine and overwrite the existing Virtual Machine in vCloud Director.

NOTE: Estimated time-to-completion for a VM restore is about 1 hour per 100GB.

Process:

Before initiating this process, ensure that the Virtual Machine you're looking to restore from backup is powered off.

From the vCloud Director dashboard navigate to: Data Protection

Select the Organization Virtual Datacenter that houses your Virtual Machine

Select "vApps" under the Copies section in the sidebar navigation

Select the vApp containing the Virtual Machine you'd like to restore. Click the context menu, and select "Show Backups".

Identify the date of the desired backup. Click the context menu, and select "Restore to Original".

For Restore Type, highlight the Virtual Machine option and click "Next".

Select the Virtual Machine from the list and press 'Next' to continue

Lastly, review the virtual disks for the virtual machine, and click "Next".

The restore will begin and you will see the task start in the task manager below:

Please see the table below for an estimated time of completion for this task.

Virtual Machine Size (GB)Approximate Restore Time
4012m
8024m
16048m
3201h 36m
6403h 12m
12806h 24m

Lastly, ensure that the task completed successfully. You should now be able to power on your Virtual Machine to the state it was in at the time of backup.

Congratulations, you're done!

Applies to: All Virtual Machines

Additional Notes: Due to a number of variables, the task might hang in the task list at around 10%. If this occurs, please note the time the restore was started, and allow the estimated time of completion (estimated time-to-completion for a VM restore is about 1 hour per 100GB.) to progress before opening a support ticket.
