Install Microsoft Office 365 with Shared Computer Activation
Background: CloudConnect offers license mobility for qualifying Microsoft Office 365 software products. CloudConnect is a member of the Microsoft Qualified Multi-Tenant Host (QMTH) Program, which allows CloudConnect customers to take advantage of this valuable extension of use rights for these qualifying Office 365 Products. Normally, Office 365 installable software is only licensed for use on hardware devices that are owned by the Office 365 subscriber. The QMTH program extends these installation rights to customers whom access Published Desktops on the CloudConnect Platform. As a result, users will not be charged SPLA licenses for their Microsoft Office installations, provided the administrator follows this process when installing the qualifying Office 365 software into the Published Desktop environment.
Note: Office 365 ProPlus and all Office 365 suites that include Office 365 ProPlus (including E3 and E5) are eligible for the QMTH Program. Project Online Professional and Visio Pro for Office 365 are also eligible for the QMTH Program. Office 365 Business and Office 365 Business Premium are NOT eligible.
Additional Note: In order to complete this procedure, you will need administrator access to VMware Cloud Director, Domain Administrator Rights to the Windows Operating System running on the virtual machine hosting the Published Desktops, and Global Administrator Rights to the organization's Office 365 and Azure Active Directory account.
Process: Prior to beginning this process, it is recommended that you Create a Quiesced Snapshot of the Virtual Machine into which you will be installing Office 365. For instructions on creating a snapshot, see: Using Virtual Machine Snapshots.
Locate the Virtual Machine hosting the Published Desktops where you would like to install Office 365 Pro Plus. In the Virtual Machine's Action menu, select "Insert Media"
Click the filter icon and type "O365". Click on the newest version of O365Config iso, and click Insert. (As of this article being written, the most recent version is V402)
Open the Virtual Machine's Console, login as a domain administrator, right click the start menu icon, and open Programs and Features
Uninstall the Office Suite. Uninstalling Microsoft Office and Installing Office 365 Pro Plus will preserve each user’s Office Settings as these settings are stored in the user’s windows profile and Office 365 profile.
Once the Volume Licensing Version of Microsoft Office has finished being removed, open an internet browser from the Desktop, and sign in to office.com
Download Office 365
Complete the installation
Open the file browser, and navigate to the DVD Drive.
Run the O365Config.exe activation tool from the DVD drive, and follow the on-screen prompts.
When prompted, enter the organization's internet domain name associated with the organization's Office 365 Subscription. This is generally the organization's email domain name.
When prompted, sign into Office 365 as a Global Administrator, if you are a CSP acting on behalf of the tenant organization, and the tenant's organization is linked to your CSP account, you may sign in with your own Office 365 credentials. If the organization is not linked to your CSP partner portal, then sign in using the customer's administrator account.
The tool will process the required changes to ensure a smooth activation and remove the billing for Microsoft Office under SPLA
The configuration is now complete. Each user will now be prompted activate Office by validating with their Microsoft account the next time they launch an Office application from their Published Desktop.
Once you are satisfied that things are working properly, remove the snapshot, if you created one before starting this process. Also please remember to eject the O365Config media from the Virtual Machine once you are finished.
Additional Information: For each Office 365 license, a user is allotted 5 devices to use that license on. This means that the End User’s virtual desktop will count as one of these. CloudConnect is required to report to Microsoft the number of users and licenses being utilized on our platform, and we do this by Azure Active Directory Tenant ID and Office 365 Tenant ID.
Once activated, CloudConnect will remove the Microsoft Office SKU from the monthly invoice. To assist our partners with licensing compliance, a $0.00 O365 SCA SKU, along with a quantity of users will appear on the monthly invoice/usage reports. We do this so partners can reconcile the total number of Office 365 installations to the total number of licenses that CloudConnect is reporting to Microsoft each month.
To ensure compliance, each Office 365 installation should correspond to a single Office 365 Tenant ID (organization), and each user accessing the installation must have an Office 365 license within that same Office 365 Tenant ID.
Applies To: Microsoft Office 365 ProPlus, E3, and E5. Microsoft Windows Published Desktops running on the CloudConnect Platform.
